MASTERS CORNER by DR. MARY TROTTO

It is never too early to think about the Ocean to Sound Relay.  Those who would like to run for BTC Masters and Senior Masters team should contact Mary Trotto or Betty Horstmann.  We have a great idea for this year’s race, but it will mean some pre-planning.  In the meantime, there is the Long Island Marathon and Half Marathon.  Every year we have a picnic table or two for BTC members just beyond the finish.  BTC members can bring food, change of clothes and other stuff.  We will have beer, drinks and coolers to hold your food and drinks.  If you are planning to run either race, please let me know.  If you do not plan to run, you can still be part of the fun and picnic.  Come and cheer on the BTC runners and then enjoy some fun.  We will have our banner and last year all of the other running clubs, New Hyde Park, Northport and others were all in the same place.  Maybe we can get Jose to bring his famous Rice and Beans dish.  Last year the weather was not great but we still partied!  This year let’s hope for better weather.

Below find the Spring Opener: This is a LITF-sanctioned meet.  Anyone interested in running track is invited to attend. There are relays at this meet.

Finally, at the recent Aspire 10K, nine BTC members ran through the rain and puddles so that we could have two teams scoring.  Considering the fact that 2/3 of the runners did not show up to run BTC scored well for team points.  The next grand prix is the Thunder Run.  If you plan to run let me know.  Email: mtrotto@liu.edu or call me at 631-979-8445.

Members News:

It is always great to get good news from a BTC member.  Lori Osborne, (formerly Lori Gerondel) had a baby boy on February 24th.  Connor Harold Osborne, weighed in at eight pounds and five ounces and was 20 and a half inches long.  We can expect to see Lori at the summer workouts at the Connetquot track this summer.

More good news came when Kevin McDermott informed me that he and his lovely wife, Leslie, now have a beautiful baby girl!  Congratulations to the proud parents.

The Clasens took first place in the Rumba contest at the Stardust dance weekend in Monticello.  They may not be doing much running but their dancing has definitely improved.

Fred Lipsky was featured in a Newsday article on Sunday, April 3rd.  Fred is a member of the exclusive “Seven Continents Club”.  Fred has run a marathon on every continent!

Please welcome our newest member, Janis Henderson to the BTC.

Please e-mail your news to me at estellaclasen@aol.com or call me at 803-0586 (this is a new number).

PS  Please bring any unused water bottles, sun visors, medals, to me at the next several meetings.  I use them as prizes at school in my Physical Education program.

MARCH 20TH BLOOD DRIVE

Fifty athletes came to the Melville Center and 45 pints of blood where donated.  The Bohemia members who donated were: Betty Horstmann, Sue Kretzmer, Ross Moore, Michael Salerno, me (Marge Smith) and Jay Yzaguirre.  Thank you all.  I don’t know if any or the 5 who were turned away were Bohemia members, if you were  one of them, thanks for being there.  The rules and regulations governing donors change often, if you haven’t been able to donate in the past give it a try at the next drive on July 17th.

THURSDAY NIGHT ST. JAMES GENERAL STORE RUN

Marge Smith

Now that we are back on Daylight Savings Time, one will notice many cars in the lot across from the store on Thursday evenings, some occupants of the cars changing into running clothes. The first runners arrive before 5PM.  Different groups leave at different times, most about 6.   Since I walk, I leave about 5.  Over the years different courses have developed and they all seem to lead to the pond in Stony Brook and then back to the general store.  The course has many hills, turns, water views and opportunities to create new courses.  About 7:15-7:30 we leave for pizza and beer.  The group consists of runners from various clubs with various running abilities.  All are welcome, give it a try.
