Due to the Holiday Party and the fact that we are all so busy this
time of year, there will be no meeting on Wednesday, December 17th. Next meeting: January 21st and this will be our awards meeting so
please make every effort to attend and congratulate the award winners. Don’t forget our Annual Trail Run:
the Champagne and Cookie Run at Heckscher State Park on January
1,2004. Meet at Parking Field 1 at
9:30-9:45am and we will car pool to
the start. Two distances are
run. The 5-mile trail and the 10-mile
trail. These are both run on the
Greenbelt Trail and end at Heckscher
for our Annual Champagne and Cookie celebration of the New Running
Year!!! This is an event not to be
missed!!!!!!!!!! |
ATHLETES FOR LIFE BLOOD DRIVE
Saturday, December
27 9am to 2:30 pm
Melville Marriott
– Exit 41 N off LIE and Bohemia Blood
Bank – Vets. Highway
“Our community demands nearly 800 life-saving donation of blood daily to meet the transfusion needs of patients in close to 50 Long Island hospitals” remarks Dr. James Louie, Executive Director of LI Blood Services. “Yet currently less than 2% of eligible people in our community donate blood versus the nationwide average of 5% of eligible in a community donation. “
Donating blood is one of the most rewarding things that I do. You cannot beat the feeling of knowing that you are saving someone else’s life. If you are concerned about a drop in your running performance, consider donating platelets. Platelets are used to help cancer and leukemia patients. Platelet donations do not remove any of your oxygen-bearing red blood cells so you will not have any decrease in your running performance. Platelet donations do, however, take longer than a regular red-blood cell donation. We all have time on a Saturday to save someone’s life though.
To schedule a platelet donation on Saturday, December 27 call 1-800-933-2566. They are scheduling appointments at 9am and 9:15am and then again at 11am at the Marriott and 11:15am and in Bohemia platelets are scheduled for 11:30. Please make a call – it is a matter of life or death!!!!

Have you opened your January issue of Runners’ World? Well check out pp50 and 51 and you will see the Lipsky brothers, Fred and Barry standing next to P. Diddy. Barry was asking the runners around him who this guy P. Diddy was that everyone was snapping pictures of; and look what happens he gets himself into Runners World. Only problem is where are the Bohemia singlets on these two – what’s with the NYPD singlets guys?
Barry and Fred will be signing autographs at the Holiday party so bring your copy of Runners World on Sunday!!!!!!
NATIONAL 5K CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The women’s 50-59 team of Marie Louise Michelsohn, Ellie Gavin, Mary Trotto and Helma Clavin placed 3rd. In additon, Marie Louise placed first in the 60-64 age group with a new course record of 22:09. Ellie Gavin, despite coming down with a head cold the day before, was able to place third in her new age group of 55-59. Helma Clavin, who was recently chosen as the NY Ultra Woman Runner of the Year, complained that the course was too short and who put that big hill in the middle of the course??? Seriously, she did well placing 5th in the 60-64 category.
For the men: Joe Cordero, Maury Dean, Jose Mendez, Blaine Lawson and Charlie Watts placed 4th in the 60-69 category. They missed third place by seconds! In addition, Joe Cordero ran 21:46 and placed third in the 65-69 age group. His time was the third fastest time run in his age group on this course. Everyone agreed it was a great race, great competition and a very challenging course. Ellie is already vowing to return next year and beat her time when she is feeling better. Hopefully next year we can field more than two teams. Mark your calendar now!! The championships are usually the week after our 8K race.
