MEMBERSHIP NEWS - December 2005
Those
of you who are AARP members might have run across an interesting article in
your November bulletin entitle “Running Away From Alzheimer’s”.
Even more interesting is the fact that BTC member, Alexandra Finger, is
featured in the article. Alexandra
has been running for over 30 years and is a consistent age-group winner at the
age of 71. She still runs 25-30
miles a week.
Alex’s
mother has Alzheimer’s disease. This
disease affects some 4.5 million older Americans.
The gist of the article is that there is a growing body of evidence
that suggests that exercise may prevent or at least delay the onset of
dementia. It is nice to know that
we are all doing our part to stay mentally as well as physically fit.
Joe
and Sue Cordero, Betty and Fred Horstmann, Jose and Daisy Mendez, Charles and
Ann Vermaelen, Estella and Bob Clasen, Kellie Stamm and Susann Cuccia were all
treated to a fun weekend at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in
Susann
won the 5K race there while her good buddy Kellie Stamm took second (even
beating Bob Clasen). Kelly twisted
her ankle about three quarters into the race but still managed to finish.
Unfortunately, she spent some of her weekend at a medical clinic and
spent the rest of the weekend in a soft cast and in a wheelchair.
However, that did not stop Kellie from some hardy partying!
I was glad to hear that her injury was not as bad as we thought.
I hear Kellie is back to running.
Please
welcome our newest members: Dean Bright, Alice Hageman and John Harbulak.

MASTERS
CORNER:
Once again we are coming to
the end of another wonderful year. BTC
has put on two successful races this year, and timed a few more.
The club has a great web page with pictures and race results.
In addition individual members had some outstanding running achievements
this year. Marie Louise
Michelsohn was flawless at the World Outdoor Championships in
Finally we have a few things to end the year
and start the new one. Upcoming is the Santa’s Toy Race which we do the timing
and results for. If you are free on Dec. 11th please come down to the
Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue and
help out. The race does not start
until
That same day is our annual Christmas Party, put on your dancing shoes
and kick up a storm. We will have
great fun and the food is expected to be fantastic.
On the 30th of December is the first of three LITF indoor
track meets. Our club has won the Soar Foot trophy for three years running.
2nd wind Men’s Masters Team tried to take it from us last
year but BTC prevailed by 2 points. If
you have nothing to do on Friday the 30th of December, come to SCCC
in
Following the indoor meet is our annual NEW YEAR’S DAY Trail RUN.
This run starts at Hecksher State Park and we car pool at 10AM
from the park up to the 5 and 10 mile trail markers and basically run back to
the park. Champagne, home made
cookies and other goodies await us at the end of the run.
We usually invite GLIRC, Northport,

The winners will receive fabulous prizes.

LACTATE
THRESHOLD IS AFFECTED MORE BY HEAT THAN BY HYDRATION
Medicine
and Science in Sports and Exercise, 30
Papadopoulos,
C., Doyle, J. A., & Thompson, W. R. (1998)
ABSTRACT
The effect
of hypohydration on lactate threshold in a hot and humid environment was
evaluated. Males (N = 10) performed four randomly assigned maximal treadmill
tests. Two trials were at room temperature (22 degrees Celsius) and two were in
a heat chamber (37 degrees Celsius). One trial was euhyrdated and the other
hypohydrated. Hypohydration was restricted to -1 to -2.6% change in body weight.
Lactate threshold occurred at a significantly earlier stage, lower VO2, and
higher core temperature in the heat trials than in the room temperature trials.
Lactate threshold was not affected by hydration.
Implication. Temperature has a greater effect upon lactate threshold than
hydration.
LESSON:
RUN IN AN AIR CONDITIONED ROOM
Medicine
and Science in Sports and Exercise, 32
Margaurucci,
C., & Mansouri, M
ABSTRACT
Three
different recovery protocols were evaluated for their effectiveness in clearing
lactic acid developed during a 30-s maximal cycling effort. Recreationally
active college students (N = 8) served as Ss. The first protocol consisted of 20
minutes of cycling at 50% HRmax. The second comprised 20 minutes of alternating
10 minutes of cycling at 50% HR max and 10 minutes of inactivity (seated on an
ergometer). The final protocol was 20 minutes of inactivity while seated on an
ergometer.
CONCLUSION: Continuous cycling was
found to be significantly more effective at removing lactic acid than either of
the other two conditions.
Implication. Continuous activity after maximal exhausting sprinting
promotes faster recovery.
LESSON:
YOU CAN RECOVER EVEN FASTER IF YOU DON’T RUN SO HARD IN THE FIRST
PLACE!
VO2max IS
THE BEST PREDICTOR OF RUNNING PERFORMANCE IN MASTER ATHLETES
Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 32
Wiswell,
R. A., Jaque, S. V. Marcell, T. J., Hawkins, S. A., Tarpenning, K. M.,
Constantine, N., & Hyslop, D. M
ABSTRACT
Master
runners (M = 111; F = 57), who ran at least 10 miles per week for five or more
years, served as Ss.
Males had significantly greater body mass, fat-free mass, and VO2max than
females. Fat-free mass and VO2max declined with age in both genders. Running
performance was significantly better for males but declined with age in both
genders. Lactate threshold was significantly greater for males than females, and
declined significantly with age in males. Lactate threshold expressed as a
percentage of VO2max did not differ between genders and increased with age.
VO2max was the strongest predictor of performance in both genders. Lactate
threshold added to the predictability of 5- and 10-km running performance in
females.
Implication. VO2max is the best predictor of running performance in
master athletes of both genders.
LESSON: DID YOU THINK YOU COULD RUN WITHOUT OXYGEN?????
If
I do not see you at the Christmas Party, have a wonderful and peaceful holiday
and
think of giving some help to those who are still displaced by the Hurricanes of
the Summer.
With
much aloha,
MARY
