MEMBERSHIP NEWS - December 2005

Those of you who are AARP members might have run across an interesting article in your November bulletin entitle “Running Away From Alzheimer’s”.  Even more interesting is the fact that BTC member, Alexandra Finger, is featured in the article.  Alexandra has been running for over 30 years and is a consistent age-group winner at the age of 71.  She still runs 25-30 miles a week.

Alex’s mother has Alzheimer’s disease.  This disease affects some 4.5 million older Americans.  The gist of the article is that there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that exercise may prevent or at least delay the onset of dementia.  It is nice to know that we are all doing our part to stay mentally as well as physically fit.

Joe and Sue Cordero, Betty and Fred Horstmann, Jose and Daisy Mendez, Charles and Ann Vermaelen, Estella and Bob Clasen, Kellie Stamm and Susann Cuccia were all treated to a fun weekend at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs .  Some earned the trip with exceptional running while others won the weekend by sheer luck.

Susann won the 5K race there while her good buddy Kellie Stamm took second (even beating Bob Clasen).  Kelly twisted her ankle about three quarters into the race but still managed to finish.  Unfortunately, she spent some of her weekend at a medical clinic and spent the rest of the weekend in a soft cast and in a wheelchair.  However, that did not stop Kellie from some hardy partying!  I was glad to hear that her injury was not as bad as we thought.  I hear Kellie is back to running.

Please welcome our newest members: Dean Bright, Alice Hageman and John Harbulak.

MASTERS CORNER:

Once again we are coming  to the end of another wonderful year.  BTC has put on two successful races this year, and timed a few more.  The club has a great web page with pictures and race results.  In addition individual members had some outstanding running achievements this year.  Marie Louise Michelsohn was flawless at the World Outdoor Championships in San Sebastian , Spain .  Joe Cordero and Mary Trotto became national steeplechase champions in Honolulu .  Betty Horstman represented the club at the Friehoffer’s Women’s race as an invited master athlete.  Rudy Afanador… well Rudy is Rudy; he truly is our ever-ready ultra runner.  At the Grand Prix road races Joe Cordero, Mike Service, Jose Mendez, Tim DeLeo Jay Masten, Frank Notarstefano, Larry Eastman. Silas Murray, Jay Yzaguirre, Frank Pelligrino, Randy Salamone, Rudy Afanador, Jay Satenstein, Richard Hollmann, Ben Onza and Charlie Watts kept the team points alive in the LITF Grand Prix Team Competition. They are currently the 2nd place Master Team and 6th place in the Open. For the women,  Betty Horstmann, Helma Clavin, Joan Ackerman, Alex Finger,  Z Denis, Mary Fraker, Alex Gonzalez, Helen Visgauss, Pat Carroll, Judy Carroll, Mary Wagner, Mary Trotto, Sue Kretzmer, Marie Louise Michelsohn, Sue Nesbihal- Cordero, and Daisy Mendez all scored.  BTC women’s teams are 7th in the Open and 3rd in the Masters.  Last year, if any one remembers, the women challenged the men to do better this year; the women had beaten them 2 years in a row.  So the men took the challenge and this year they beat us both in the Open and Masters Division.  Next year ladies it is our year to shine!

Finally we have a few things to end the year and start the new one. Upcoming is the Santa’s Toy Race which we do the timing and results for. If you are free on Dec. 11th please come down to the Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue  and help out.  The race does not start until 11AM .  That will give you time to run in the morning and then come to the race to help the timing and the finish line.  If you plan to help please come at 9:30 to help with set up of the finish line and the race registration.  You can come by at 10:30 to just  help at the finish line.

That same day is our annual Christmas Party, put on your dancing shoes and kick up a storm.  We will have great fun and the food is expected to be fantastic.

On the 30th of December is the first of three LITF indoor track meets. Our club has won the Soar Foot trophy for three years running.  2nd wind Men’s Masters Team tried to take it from us last year but BTC prevailed by 2 points.  If you have nothing to do on Friday the 30th of December, come to SCCC in Brentwood .  You do not have to pre-register for this meet.  The meet starts at 6PM to 10pm .  The first running race will be the 3000m race walk and that goes off at 6pm .  That will be followed by the Pee Wee 50 and then the Open and Masters 1500m race.  So if you get there by 6pm you should have about 20min to warm up prior to the 1500m.  After the 1500m there will be the 50m dash (all ages), the 400m race (all ages), and after the 400m will be the 4 x 800m relay for Open and Masters.  This is the relay I would like to have our team run.  4 men at least and 4 women.  If we have 8 men or women we can put in an Open and Masters Team or a Masters and Senior Masters team.  The relay should go off around 7:30PM .  Knowing the time it should be contested can help you plan your day.  In any case, plan to be at the college by 6:50 just in case things are running faster than anticipated.  Running track is a great way to change the pace, just remember the track is slick so wear sneakers that have good grippers on the bottom.  In addition to the running races, there are field events that evening for those who would like to try and throw or jump.

Following the indoor meet is our annual NEW YEAR’S DAY Trail RUN.  This run starts at Hecksher State Park and we car pool at 10AM from the park up to the 5 and 10 mile trail markers and basically run back to the park.  Champagne, home made cookies and other goodies await us at the end of the run.  We usually invite GLIRC, Northport, Massapequa and other running clubs on the island to join us for this really fun event.

Our January meeting is  The Annual Awards Night, if you feel that there is someone who should be honored or receive a special recognition, please give me a call.  631-979-8445.  Remember, we give out the most improved runner award (so please nominate someone who you feel is the most improved runner)  and a variety of other awards.  This year for the first time we will also have fun and exciting relay races.  The winners will receive fabulous prizes.  Mark your calendar for the 18th of January and then pray that it does not snow!

LACTATE THRESHOLD IS AFFECTED MORE BY HEAT THAN BY HYDRATION

Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 30

Papadopoulos, C., Doyle, J. A., & Thompson, W. R. (1998)

ABSTRACT

The effect of hypohydration on lactate threshold in a hot and humid environment was evaluated. Males (N = 10) performed four randomly assigned maximal treadmill tests. Two trials were at room temperature (22 degrees Celsius) and two were in a heat chamber (37 degrees Celsius). One trial was euhyrdated and the other hypohydrated. Hypohydration was restricted to -1 to -2.6% change in body weight.

Lactate threshold occurred at a significantly earlier stage, lower VO2, and higher core temperature in the heat trials than in the room temperature trials. Lactate threshold was not affected by hydration.

Implication. Temperature has a greater effect upon lactate threshold than hydration.

LESSON:  RUN IN AN AIR CONDITIONED ROOM

CONTINUOUS ACTIVITY RECOVERY BEST FOR CLEARING LACTIC ACID

Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 32

Margaurucci, C., & Mansouri, M

ABSTRACT

Three different recovery protocols were evaluated for their effectiveness in clearing lactic acid developed during a 30-s maximal cycling effort. Recreationally active college students (N = 8) served as Ss. The first protocol consisted of 20 minutes of cycling at 50% HRmax. The second comprised 20 minutes of alternating 10 minutes of cycling at 50% HR max and 10 minutes of inactivity (seated on an ergometer). The final protocol was 20 minutes of inactivity while seated on an ergometer.

CONCLUSION:  Continuous cycling was found to be significantly more effective at removing lactic acid than either of the other two conditions.

Implication. Continuous activity after maximal exhausting sprinting promotes faster recovery.

LESSON:  YOU CAN RECOVER EVEN FASTER IF YOU DON’T RUN SO HARD IN THE FIRST PLACE!

VO2max IS THE BEST PREDICTOR OF RUNNING PERFORMANCE IN MASTER ATHLETES
Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, 32

Wiswell, R. A., Jaque, S. V. Marcell, T. J., Hawkins, S. A., Tarpenning, K. M., Constantine, N., & Hyslop, D. M

ABSTRACT

Master runners (M = 111; F = 57), who ran at least 10 miles per week for five or more years, served as Ss.

Males had significantly greater body mass, fat-free mass, and VO2max than females. Fat-free mass and VO2max declined with age in both genders. Running performance was significantly better for males but declined with age in both genders. Lactate threshold was significantly greater for males than females, and declined significantly with age in males. Lactate threshold expressed as a percentage of VO2max did not differ between genders and increased with age. VO2max was the strongest predictor of performance in both genders. Lactate threshold added to the predictability of 5- and 10-km running performance in females.

Implication. VO2max is the best predictor of running performance in master athletes of both genders.

LESSON:  DID YOU THINK YOU COULD RUN WITHOUT OXYGEN?????

If I do not see you at the Christmas Party, have a wonderful and peaceful holiday

and think of giving some help to those who are still displaced by the Hurricanes of the Summer.

With much aloha,

MARY
