In the team standings BTC did quite well in the 2003 season and will be looking to do even better in 2004.  We can do better just by communicating better.  There were times last year that the BTC missed out on a scoring opportunity simply because members who ran did not notify the team captain that they were running the race.  This year, all BTC members are reminded to check in with the BTC table at all Grand Prix races so that they can be assigned to the appropriate team for scoring in the grand prix.  Remember you must be a bona fide member of BTC, which means you have paid your dues for 2004 and you must be a member of LITF for 2004.  You can sign up on line or at the first LITF Grand Prix race upcoming in Feb.

In 2003, BTC teams placed as follows: 1st place MEN’s and WOMEN’s Senior Masters; 3rd place Women’s Open; 3rd place Women’s Masters; 3rd place Men’s Masters and 7th place Men’s Open.

Two BTC teams were also recognized for their performance at the Cross Country Race; The Rob’s Run:
1st place Women Masters: Mary T., Sue Ketzner, Lori McKeough and Helma.

2nd place Mixed Masters: Betty, Satu, Joe C. and Mike S.

Also acknowledged for their achievement were the LITF Tournament of Champions; this was a series of races during 2003 which were scored by age grading the times.  Age grading multiplies the times by an age factor.  The purpose of age grading is to attempt to mathematically equal the times of a 60 year old versus the performances of the Elite Open performances.  Age grading of 90% or more is considered to be a great time.  Betty Horstmann, Marie Louise Michelsohn and Joe Cordero had very high age graded performances in 2003; with Marie Louise and Betty being in the high and mid 90% and Joe age grading in the high 80%.  The Tournament of Champions winners were: Betty Horstmann 2nd; Joe Cordero 4th; Jose Mendez 6th; Warren Steinert 11th. and Joan Ackerman 12th.

Finally there were two special certificates given at the meeting.  One went to Sharon Jacka-Moore, for all her years of service “behind the scenes” to the club.  She received the BTC VOLUNTEER of the Year Award and Pat Satenstein received the Ambassador of Good Cheer Award.  This award was given to Pat for her willingness to help and always supporting BTC events with a cheery smile and good humor.

The final awards given at the end of the meeting were the plagues given for the Most Improved Runner in 2003 and the Hall of Fame award.  The Most improved runners for 2003 were:

For the Women: Zoila Denis and Mary Fraker;both of these women had outstanding times this year, they bettered their times in every distance that they ran over last years times.  Keep up the good work Z and Mary.

For the Men:Tim Deleo, Tim also had an outstanding year with PR’s in distances from the 5k to the marathon. Tim also tried his hand at the ultra distance, doing quite well in the 6 hour birthday run this past October.

The BTC inductee into the Hall of Fame was Sue Nesbihal-Cordero.  She was recognized for her work for BTC over the years.  She has served as membership and hospitality Chairs, as well as vice president of the club, co-manager of the BTC racing team and the major force behind all of us looking so great at the races ~ our uniform manager.  Most importantly Sue was honored for her voice:  she can be found at many a mile marker cheering the BTC runners on to a faster time.  She was recognized as our Cheerleader- Extraordinaire!

As you can see, the accomplishments of our members this year were fantastic.  From the winning of the Soar Foot Award to the standings in the Grand Prix, our runners are some of the best on the Island.  More importantly, we are there for each other.  The camaraderie and support one can find at the races makes BTC a very special club.  BTC is a club of runners who really enjoy being together, enjoy running and competing and, as our Christmas Party attests, enjoy dancing and having a great time.  Speaking of great times, I asked those marathoners who attended the Awards meeting to list their marathons and their finishing times.  Here is the list:

I would like to finish up this masters corner with a request from the members to take a few minutes to voice your opposition to the meet directors of the Millrose Games this year.  According to the meet directors, Master Events do not fit at the Millrose games because there is not enough interest in these events.  With that thinking the meet directors canceled the running of the Men’s and Women’s 4 X 400m master relay and they eliminated the other men’s masters’ event.  I have the name of one of the meet directors and his email.  I would like as many of you as possible to email this guy and let him know that track and field is truly a lifetime sport and that having the master athlete run at the Millrose is as vital to the sport as having the high school and college relays.

Our voices may make a difference for the next running of the Millrose Games.  So please let the meet director know how you feel.  Especially for those of you who went to the games last year because our women were running, if you are not planning to go this year then it is important that you let them know that they have lost your money this year.  I was originally had planned to boycott the Millrose this year, but instead I will go and put some signs up around the rotunda trying to get support for the master events.  I will be asking those attending to voice their concern about the canceling of the running of the master’s 4 x 400m relay.  The meet director is  Skip Stolley his email is: Skip@prosportsinc.com; see below:

Our first priority after becoming the new “steward” of the Millrose Games is to improve the product—the competition on the floor.  We have attempted to do that with every level of competition—high school, collegiate, and world-class—and it required eliminating some events and adding others.  I know Masters competition is big in New York, but the masters relays have not sold tickets, attracted new sponsors, or generated any media coverage or interest from television.  To wit, the Garden seats 16,210 for track.  The meet has not been a sell-out since 1994, the upper bowl hasn’t even been open for the past 4-years, and last year only 8,103 tickets were sold.   Frankly, the Verizon Millrose Games had become a 5-hour track meet with 90min of elite invitational events surrounded by a 3-1/2 hour All-Comers meet, that format wasn’t being supported by paying customers, sponsors, or television. This is not just about finding 10-minutes for 2 masters relays.  Its also about broadening the meet’s appeal to a younger audience and getting our 2004 event schedule down to 3 ½ hours of action, energy, and entertainment.  I know the Masters loved running at the Garden.  But the Millrose Games is not the proper venue to advance that level of our sport.  Thankfully, the NY Armory has a lengthy schedule of indoor meets to serve that constituency.Skip Stolley, Vice President, Running EventsPro Sports & Entertainment, Inc. 10 East Yananoli Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101  Main: 805.884.9977 ext. 226  Fax: 805.884.1084 Skip@Prosportsinc.com     http://www.prosportsinc.com

I happen to know that the new director is giving tickets away to schools in the city and they are also selling tickets for 75% at the armory and at other venues in order to fill up the garden. The meet director should know that the master athlete and those who support master running are those who would support the meet by paying full price for their tickets.

Membership News

We had a great turnout at last month’s meeting thanks to Mary Trotto’s special award presentations.  All levels and abilities of runners were recognized for their efforts and for running for the BTC.  One of the attributes of the club that I love is that every runner, whether slow or fast, has a place in our club.

This past year the LITF hosted its first tournament of Champions.  This consisted of three designated races theat were scored on an age graded basis.  Prize money was awarded to the tio 10 men and women on Long Island.  Checking the results I saw some of our members names in the winners category.  Congratulations to Joe Cordero (4th place), Jose Mendez (6th place), Betty Horstmann (2nd place), and Helma Clavin (9th place).  We all know that they worked hard for that money.

Please welcome new members, Randy Salamone and Ben Skura.
