Friends of Karen On Sunday, May 6, 2007, please join Friends of Karen, a lifeline to critically-ill children and their families at the Long Island Marathon. This year, Nassau County Parks Commissioner, Mr. Jose Lopez, has added a 10-K run to the half and full marathon. The course has been improved and the Commissioner has gained the support of many high school bands to encourage the runners along the way .By joining us, your efforts will benefit Friends of Karen Family Support Program, which helps families with children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. For one of the most rewarding races you’ll ever experience and knowing that your help will support these families, please join us on Sunday, May 6. For more information on Friends of Karen, call (631) 473-1768, ext. 304, or visit www.friendsofkaren.org The Rudy Fund Last fall the Rudy Fund received a very generous anonymous contribution from one of our members. Another contribution was received right after the New Year. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the fund, it was established probably five or six years ago to help our member, Rudy Afanador, with his expenses while doing ultras and other extreme feats. He has finished “Badwater” twice, once coming in second. That event starts in Death Valley at 242 feet below sea level and finished 135 miles later at an altitude about 9,000 above sea level. Another event was “Leadville” Co.. That race is a 100mile turn around which starts at about 9000 feet and goes up and down for 50 miles and reaches an elevation of about 14,000 feet then the runner turns around and runs the 50 miles back to where he started. Both of these events continue throughout the night. In 2005 and 206 Rudy was on the United States World Challenge 24-hour team. The 2005 event was held in Austria and the 2006 in Taiwan. Runners had to pay their own expenses for those races also. His future endeavors are uncertain at this time, but contributions will gladly be accepted so he won’t have to make his decision based on financial output. Cash or check is fine. If by check put “Rudy Fund” on the memo line and make it out either Marge Smith or BTC. and send to me: Marge Smith, 63 Feller Drive, C.Islip, NY 11722. I’ll send you a receipt.

ATHLETES FOR LIFE BLOOD DRIVE By Marge Smith
The drive is March 24th at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Library, 999 Old Country Road, Community Room (lower level) from 10AM to 3:30PM. Donor requirement: Bring a valid ID and know your social security number. Eat well & drink fluids before donation. No tattoos for the past 12 months and you must weigh at least 110lbs. It would be nice if Bohemia had a good showing at this drive. The blood donated goes to help cancer patients, burn victims and other seriously ill people. Science has made great strives in many health areas, but to date they have been unable to find a substitute for human blood. Last week the New York Blood Center issued an emergency appeal. Your blood is needed! In Newsday on Jan. 24, 2007, there was an article and picture about fellow runner George Dennis. George, who is 83, was featured because it was the 55th anniversary of his first blood donation. Although it mentioned that he was a German POW for 344 days during WW11, started running at 57 and has run seven New York Marathons the article was about his blood donations which amount to 145 pints or about 18 gallons! As George said in the article, “No big deal – it doesn’t hurt and it helps a lot of people. I find it pleasurable to contribute something to my fellow man.” Or as I keep thinking, I’m glad I’m on the giving end of the process. There are some medical reasons people can’t donate, weight under 110 is one of them and if you have been on malaria pills or gotten a tattoo within the past year or spend a lengthy time in Great Britain are a few others. If you have any questions bring them to the Feb. meeting or I can try to find out for you. I can be reached at 631-234-7733 or marge523@optonline.net. As an extra added incentive ALL DONORS WILL RECEIVE A FREE PAIR OF METS TICKETS FOR A GAME AT SHEA STADIUM IN APRIL.
MEMBERSHIP NEWS FEBRUARY 2007
There still seems to be some confusion about where to send our membership dues. All dues should be sent to the membership chairperson. That would be me, Estella Clasen, 3 Cedar St., Bellport, NY 11713. Individual dues are $20 and a family membership is $25. I believe some members have been sending dues to our PO Box address. If you did, please just give me a quick call at 803-0586 to let me know you have paid. I will be revising the roster soon and I would hate to delete any of our members. If you are already a member, there is no need to fill out another application.
Estella and Bob Clasen will be competing Pro-Am at the New York Dance Festival on Saturday Feb. 24th at the Roseland Ballroom situated between 52nd Street and 8th Ave. in Manhattan. They will be competing in the morning starting at 10am. Tickets to view the morning competition cost $25 and they would love to have some members attend to cheer them on. Our next meeting is Feb. 21st. I am happy to see that attendance has increased at the meetings. We have a good program planned, refreshments, and a great opportunity to socialize with our fellow BTC members. After many years of conducting the summer speed workouts (I am guessing 15 years), Estella has decided to hand the workouts over to Joe Cordero. Estella would like to participate in some dance workshops over the summer. However, don’t be surprised if she shows up for some of the workouts to race walk. Lori McKeough was not able to compete this year at the Milrose Games on the Masters 4X400 relay because she was scheduled for back surgery. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Speaking of the Milrose Games, I was thrilled to watch our women’s masters 4X400 team of Phoebe Anderson, Jen Hallock, Caryl Senn, and Laura Soper compete. They came in second place out of five teams. Pat Carrroll was there as their alternate and also offered support for the team. The club is very proud of these five ladies. Please e-mail Estella at eclasen@optonline.net if you have news I can use for the newsletter. If you are at a race or BTC function and take photos please send them to our webmaster at blumenauer@optonline.net. Please welcome our newest member, Jed Myers and Jen Hallock.

Special Performance Awards: Showing the depth and breath of our club, members performed well on the track, on the roads and on the trails. Our runners excelled in the short distances, jumping into the air and galloping over the hurdles. BTC runners ran in circles for 20. 30, 40 miles and more. While some of our runners continued to show improvement in their running over the course of the year. The Special awards were: Joe Cordero Track Athlete of the Year Steeplechase Kim Touya Track Athlete of the year #see below Rudy Afanador Male Ultra runner of the year Sue Nesbihal-Cordero True Grit Award: Running against all odds^^ Pat Delaney Female Ultra runner of the Year Betty Horstmann Most Improved Runner *see below Joan Ackerman Most Improved Runner *see below Paul Murphy Most Improved Runner *see below Marie Louise Michelsohn Hall of Fame Inductee
#Kim Touya not only had an outstanding year competing in NC for the Outdoor Nationals, but her performance in the 100m, triple jump and long jump was high enough to give her All-American status. All-American performances are designed to award master athletes who perform on the track or in the field at a high level. In her first master’s national meet, Kim achieved three All-American standards. Joe Cordero presented the patches to her on behalf of the club. *Betty and Joan showed consistent improvement from last year to this year. Joan improved her best 5k time, 15k time and 5mile time and ˝ marathon time from last year. Joan ran a 2:25:45 ˝ marathon last year and a 2:18:30 this year. Betty also improved in the 5k, 8k and 4 mile times from last year. Betty ran a 37:26 last year at the Elite 8k and 36:27 this year. *Paul started out running well in the beginning of the year but by the end of the year he was running even faster. From the spring to the winter, Paul went from 18:18 5k to a 17:07. This is a change in the pace mile from a 5:54 to a 5:30. The True Grit award went to Sue Nesbihal-Cordero for her performance at the National XC Championships and her willingness to continue to run and train despite the fact that she has limited sight and dept perception. Sue placed 1st Masters in the National XC Championships and 1st in the visually impaired category. All of us, who have run on the trails, know it is easy to trip and fall over roots and other obstacles and that is when we can see them. Sue manages to run the course and keep on her feet even though she cannot see the obstacles. Kathy Martin had been gracious enough to run with Sue and be her guide. If there are any BTC members who are not racing, please plan to run with Sue and help her “be her eyes.” If she knows what obstacles are out there, then she can run even faster. BTC inducted Marie Louise Michelsohn into the Hall of Fame for her outstanding world-class performances both on the track and on the road. Marie Louise is the world record holder in the indoor mile (6:08:49) and 2000m steeplechase (8:47:61). She also holds American records in the outdoor 1500m (5:32:82); outdoor mile (5:57:39); outdoor 3000m (11:52:22); 10,000m (41:43:64); the 8k Elite road race in 33:08. That was our annual awards night. To celebrate the occasion we had champagne and orange juice, fresh fruit and Italian miniature pastries from Alpine Bakery at the Waldbaum’s shopping center in Smithtown. Susan Cuccia’s family owns this bakery. Besides the awards, we had presenters who gave brief talks about their program. The two presenters were Gwen Wagner and Carl Cheek. Gwen Wagner, the daughter of Bill and Mary Wagner, told us about a new masters swim program being offered at Connetquot HS. Gwen will be working with head coach Alex Setchittone. The program is for all level of swimmers on Monday and Thursday evenings from 8-9:10pm. The cost will be $180 for 12 sessions. In addition, Carl Cheek told us about the Friends of Karen charity. This charity helps children with life-threatening medical problems and their families. Friends helps families pay medical and household bills, gives support and advocacy to the families of these children. Friend of Karen foundation will partner with the LI Marathon much like Team in Training works with many marathons. However, the funds needed to run for Friends of Karen are much lower than Teams in Training and, therefore, many runners will be able to raise the necessary funds to be on the Friends of Karen team. The amounts to be raised vary for the distance. This year there will be a 10k, ˝ marathon and marathon at Eisenhower Park. For each race, the runner will be required to raise a certain amount of money for Friends of Karen. The runners will get support and some coaching prior to and during the marathon, a singlet which they can wear the day of the marathon and other goodies from the sponsors. Those who cannot run can sign up to support the BTC members who plan to run for Friends of Karen. In addition to supporting this great charity for Long Island children, we were told that the Expo will have a booth for Friends of Karen. We will need BTC members to staff it. A sign-up sheet went around. I have put in the sign-up sheet for those who could not attend the meeting to see which times were not covered. Members can call Joe Cordero 859-0338 to sign up for a slot or they can sign up at the February BTC meeting.

Those willing to contribute can contact one of the runners who are planning to run Finally, the Latino Relays are coming up and the applications just came out. The Relays are February 17th. If you would like to run, this is a 6x2 mile relay in the dead of winter at Sunken Meadow, then call Joe Cordero as soon as possible. The course is rather flat and the start and finish of each leg is in the East parking lot. Six members of the club each run two miles and pass the baton. Depending on the day, keeping warm can be a real challenge. Hand warmers and toe warmers are part of the outfits of the day. The nice thing about the relay is that the runners can keep all of their warm ups on until the very last minute and then they can strip down and hand their stuff over to a member of the team and take off running for the two miles. At the finish their warm up will be right there to jump back into. The Latino relays are always great fun and a lot of cheering and screaming is all part of the event. Northport RC hosts this great event and in their style offer hot chocolate and hot chowder as well as home-bake goodies at the finish line. Last year we had a men’s masters, men’s senior masters and women’s masters and we all went home with the coveted “Latino Relay” mug. Who wants to guess what color it will be this year? February 2, 2007 at the Millrose Games, the 100th anniversary of this prestigious world class games in the oldest indoor track and field games in the world our strong, fast and determined women ages 40-44 won a third medal in the 4x400 relay. First time was a charm, the gold medal and later the world record in the 4x400 for our women in the 40-49 age group. Last year, plagued by injuries, they still managed to win the bronze in the 4x400 at the Millrose Games. This year, again plagued by injuries, they put together a brave team to win the silver in 4:57:00. Bronze, silver and gold, the rainbow of awards for our fearless fast females over age forty in three tries at the Millrose Games, a world class arena of the best runners in the world competing indoors. Phoebe Anderson was on all three teams, while assisted this year with Carol Senn who was proud of finally competing at the Millrose Games after competing in many other great venues around the world, and two newcomers, Lori Soper and Jennifer Hallack, ran their hearts out to show their determination and fighting spirit. Congratulations are in order for our four fabulous females, a lifetime memory and achievement to do so well in a great arena known as the MILLROSE GAMES. FEBRUARY EVENTS Sat.
