Message from Joe Cordero

March 2007 the Indoor National Track and Field Masters Championship will be held at the Armory in Manhattan. This is a great time for a small club from Long Island to grab the title of National Champions, something for our archives, something for the history book. Remember, last summer at Hawaii, the Outdoor National Masters Championship, with only three members from Bohemia Competing against over 200 other clubs, we scored 13th out of the 200 plus clubs. With more members competing, we have a very good chance to win the National Club title. For once, I wish to see more of our members commit to this goal, to be the best in the nation, and possibly set a few national and world records. We have a great pool of talented runners in our club so this is a very good possibility if enough of our members show up for the National Championship in Manhattan in March 2007, our days in the sun, our 15 minutes of fame, our run to glory! We have 15 months to get into top shape to be National Champions, and that is plenty of time for all of us. Joe

MEMBERSHIP NEWS

JANUARY 2006

By Estella Clasen

Happy New Year to all!  It is hard to believe that another year has ended.  I know everyone has a lot on their minds which is why I am reminding many of you that your membership dues need to be paid this month.  I am keeping a record of when everyone joined the club.  However, it would make my record keeping easier if everyone paid in January.  You can prorate your membership if you joined during the year.  Please call me at 803-0586 or e-mail me at estellaclasen@aol.com if you don’t remember when you joined or if you have any questions.  Unfortunately some members will be dropped at the end of this month.  We would hate to lose you!  A single membership fee is $20 and a family membership is $25.  Please send your dues check made payable to the “Bohemia Track Club” to Estella Clasen, 3 Cedar St. Bellport, NY 11713.

Many thanks to Marge Smith, Pat Satenstein, Mary Trotto, and Joan Ackerman for their help with the BTC holiday party.  Everyone seemed to have a great time.  Mary Trotto surprised us by being Santa and giving out gifts to all the good BTC members.  Joan contributed to the party with great party favors, hats, and beads to get us in the party mood.  Pat was a great mistress of ceremonies and took care of the raffles. No one left empty handed from this party.  Marge helped me organize and decorate for the party.  Our gratitude also goes to Ken Demulder and Susann Cuccia for providing the deserts.  Please provide any feedback on the party to Marge or myself.  The location seems to be good for the club and we would like to book it again if there are no objections.

I am in the process of updating the BTC application.  Let me know of any changes or suggestions you have for the application by the next meeting.  Hope the see you at our next meeting on January 18th.

Please welcome our newest member, Laura Sapper of Bellport.

Feel free to e-mail items for membership news to Estella at estellaclasen@aol.com.

ODDS AND ENDS

By Marge Smith

The blood drive was a great success!  114 pints of blood were collected from the 126 who volunteered  to donate.  Our members who donated were:  Jose Mendez, Betty and Fred Horstmann, Ross Moore, Ken Demulder, Juan Oliveras and me.    Thanks for your donation.  The next drive will be in March. Look for further details in future newsletters.

Don't look for RUDY AFANADOR at the end of February-he'll be in Taiwan with the World Challenge team.  That's the same group he went to Austria with last year. As we know, Rudy can run 24 hours at the drop of a hat, sitting on a plane for such a long time can be more of a challenge!  GOOD LUCK RUDY!

There was a short article in the January issue of Car and Travel, the AAA publication.  It's titled "Cleaning up Windshields" and to sum it up it sates, "lawmakers have prohibited attaching handbills and other advertisements to any part of a motor vehicle."  It doesn't state how this will be enforced or what the fines will be, but maybe we won't have so many race flyers on our windshields.

MASTERS CORNER

Congratulations to the BTC women's masters team of Betty Horstmann, Phoebe Anderson, Lori McKeough and Chris Katz. They ran a qualifying time of 5:03 for the upcoming Milrose games. The BTC team beat both Northport 5:38 and Central Park 5:15 (Central Park Team ran their qualifier at the NYC Armory on the same night. The NYC Armory has a mondo banked track and is a much faster track then the SCCC flat track. The split times for the BTC team in order were: 86sec; 72 sec.;71sec.; and 74 sec. It would be nice if as many BTC members as possible could go to the 99th running of the Milrose Games at MSG, NYC on Feb 3rd. The women will run as the first event of the night around 6:30PM. Tickets are on sale at Ticketmaster, at the Armory and at the Madison Square Garden Box Office. USATF members can get a discount when purchasing their tickets. Check out the USATF web site for more details.

LITF Indoor Track and Field Championships are Saturday Feb. 11th at Suffolk Community College, Brentwood Campus.

You must pre-register for this event.  You can get the application forms on line at the LITF web site or at our next meeting.  If you would like to run on a relay you do not have to pre-register.  I will pre-register all BTC teams, however, I must know the names of all those who would like to run on a relay.  At the championships they will run the 4 x 200m relay.  Please call me at 979-8445 or email me mtrotto@liu.edu if you want to run on a relay team.  Since the meet is from 3-7PM, the relays will not go off until close to 6:30 so if you want to only run the relay you can show up to warm up by 5:45PM

The order of events starting at 3pm: the triple jump, followed by high jump and shot followed by the long jump.  There are 6 attempts for the jumps (open and masters time permitting) and 6 attempts for the throw.  Meanwhile, at 3PM the races also start on the track.  The running races start at 3PM and proceed in order. There are no times given for the other running events since there is no way to tell how many will actually run the different races. The order is: mile/3000m Race Walk; 55m; 400m; 1500m; 55m HH; 800m; 200m; 3000m and the 4 x 200m.

It would be nice if we could have 8 women and 8 men run in the relays.  We could enter 2 women’s teams and 2 men’s team.  One team would run in the open category and one team would run in the master category.  We would get points for each team that runs.  The team with the most points overall wins the LITF Team Championship Trophy.  BTC has won the Soar Foot Cup and the Master Team Trophy for the past 3 years.  We can not win again unless member of the club plan on running the relays.  The cost of the relays will be paid for by the club.    I will register the teams.  All teams and individual entries must be pre registered.  Those who would like to come and run one of the many races.  Please pre-register before Feb. 4th   I will have the registration forms at the next meeting or you can download the registration form from the LITF web site. http://www.long-island.usatf.org/TrackField

You can come just to run in the relays, which means you can come to the track by 5:45PM. That will give you adequate time to warm up prior to the start of the relays.  However, if you want to run the 400m or the 800m you should plan to be there by 3PM.  Some runners will run the 3000m and then run the relays.  The 3000m will probably go off around 5:45PM but that is just a guess based on past meets.

Once again if you want to run in the relays please contact me so that I can send in the relay form prior the deadline.

The track is a 200m oval and you can only wear regular sneakers, The races are each run in order from youngest (the pee wee’s) to oldest for each race.  If you have nothing pressing going on that day, why not come to the track and run a race, or cheer the rest of the BTC club members to victory.
