JULY 2005
By Estella Clasen
I have retired after 33 years of teaching Physical Education in the Central Islip School District. There were many things I still enjoyed about the job but the work was getting in the way of my playing, so it was time to go.
Daisy Mendez is another recent retiree. I hear that her husband Jose is going to train her to run a marathon. Daisy will be getting plenty of exercise between her running and dancing.
The summer speed workouts have started on Wednesday evenings at the Connetquot High School track. We have no regular meetings over the summer so visiting the track on Wednesdays is a good way to keep in touch with the happenings of the running club.
We have walkers as well as runners at the workout, so there is something for everyone.
Running phenom, Betty Horstmann continues to dominate her age group at the races. She really showed what she was made of when she passed Joe Cordero at the Robert Moses one mile beach run.
Rudy Afanador’s photo was published in the “National Masters News “and in “New Living” for his impressive win at the Greenbelt 50K. Rudy is the number one ultra marathoner on Long Island.
Please call me at 803-0586 if you have an item for membership news.
BIG SUR MARATHON
SUNDAY, APRIL 24, 2005
This was our 14th Marathon that we have run together and definitely the most difficult. It was also the most beautiful. Big Sur is located in northern California along the jagged coastline, 26 miles south of Carmel. This area is known for its giant Redwood trees, Pebble Beach golf course and for being the artichoke capital of the world.
Weather, the most important uncontrollable factor when running a Marathon, was calling for rain showers for Saturday and Sunday. We arrived on Friday morning to some very nice weather, but it turned windy later on in the day. We drove straight to Monterey to register for the race and pick up our race packets. Also included with the Marathon, they offer several other races. A 5-member Team Relay, a 21-mile Power Walk, a 10.6 and 9-mile walk, and a 5K, brought the total participants to about 6,000.
Recalling the registration process leads me also remember the slightly high fee to participate in the Marathon, but it was well worth it. The $97 included a pre-race pasta party that was second to none. 3 different kinds of pasta, rolls, fresh artichokes, and asparagus, all cooked to perfection. There was also green salads, dessert, etc., and a jazz band to keep us entertained. A complimentary post-race massage, which we both took advantage of. This was the first time either one of us had received one after a race; it definitely helped with walking around for the rest of the weekend.
It rained practically all night Friday and all day on Saturday, making me extremely anxious about the race. But by the 7 a.m. start Sunday morning; it was just cloudy and about 50 degrees, PERFECT!! We could not believe how lucky we were with the weather. It was never too warm and the best part, there was no wind!! The views were spectacular as promised and the tough section of the course came at mile 10. It begins at Little Sur River Bridge at 40 ft. elevation and climbs 2 miles to Hurricane Point, which brought our elevation to 580 ft. From there we screamed downhill to the half-way point at Bixby Bridge, where for the last 20 years there has been someone in a black tuxedo and tails, playing a grand Piano. There were also some Taiko drummers, high school bands along the way and belly dancers at mile 25. The balance of the course was somewhat hilly, which seemed more difficult than the course profile on their website. At last we came into Carmel Highlands, aptly named, and then it was down into the town of Carmel and across the finish line.
The sun was peeking through the clouds, the weather improved and the rest of the day was beautiful. We both indulged in some post-race Samuel Adams while waiting for our massage. We were both satisfied with our performances, Angela ran a 4:10 and I ran a 3:33. Then it was back to the bus and down Highway One, south to Big Sur for another view of this amazing ragged landscape and the Pacific Ocean.
The
results of the Beach mile at Robert Moses State Park,
show how many of the Bohemia babes beat out the men in the mile. Helen, Chris,
Betty, and Kelly all beat me and Jose and Mike, that
should be acknowledged, since it is a rare occasion.
I like the idea Fred suggested, the Goodyear blimp hired to show BETTY BEAT JOE
IN THE MILE, published, great humorous joke on me while praising you.
So many of our women are doing so well as runners that all
should be recognized for their feats with their feet.
Scan the National Masters News for any names from our club that made it there.
I was surprised to see Blaine Lawson there along with Marie-Louise so both
should get press. And last issue they published world record performances with
the medley relay [400, 200, 200, 800] for 50-59 year olds as 4:51 while the
medley record for 60-69 with Blaine Lawson [200] and Joe Cordero [400] on that
team set their record faster with a 4:43 effort.
Our club has set many national and world records, and records are meant to be
broken by the next generation of runners. Let us keep encouraging all runners
in our club to set their own standards and then keep after them to revise their
standards, upward, higher, faster, tougher, better, whatever! JOE

I
am getting the results off the internet so if you run a race that I may not be
able to find and you want me to print it, simply mail the results to me at fwh2@aol.com and I will be glad to include
it. Also, please be patient with
me. If I miss your name in a result,
just tell me and I will be glad to add it the following month. Remember there are hundreds of runners in
each race and I have only two eyes.

The Annihilator
New kid on the block, new age group
Woe to those who must face
The Annihilator
Strong, slim, sleek and sexy sixty
Her prince, Fred the Frog
Treats her with regal royalty
Her competition wonders how this tall fairy
Can skim across the grass without allowing it to bend
Such is her great speed
As she annihilates the competition
