RUDY TO RACE FOR USA IN THE 24-HOUR ULTRARUNNING CHALLENGE

By Marge Smith

WHEN:   July 16-17, 2005

WHERE:   Woerschach, Austria

WEBSITE:   www.24stundenlauf.at

Our own Rudy Afanador is one of 25 American Ultra Runners scheduled to go to Austria!!!!!  To qualify for this, he completed over 130 miles in 24 hours.

This is quite an honor for Rudy, and since he is a member of our club, for us!

Last year the event was held in Brno, Czech Republic and in 2006 it will be held in Taipei, Taiwan.  This year it will be held in Woerschach, small town southwest of Vienna in the Austrian Alps.  They expect about 20,000 paying spectators.

There will be team and single events for a total of about 2000 runners.  There are male and female teams.  Each team will have 3 members and countries are allowed to enter 9 runners per team.  The route for Rudy’s event is a 1063.79 meter long loop and has an elevation of 6-7 meters.

I was working a 50K ultra that GLIRC put on last month.  Of course Rudy won it, by probably about 20 minutes.  I was stationed about 4 miles from the start, which was also the turn around point and about a mile from the finish.  Rudy looked just as good at the turn around and finish as he did at the start.  I keep telling him he could at least pant or pretend to be a little tired, so far, it hasn’t happened.

NOW COMES THE BEGGING PART – Since Rudy has the ability and internal fortitude to be able to compete in these extreme events, our club has had a “Rudy Fund” to help with his expenses.  It’s my understanding that some of his expenses will probably be covered but he will have many that aren’t, so we are begging for donations.  In the past the fund has enabled him to go to Badwater and will help with his expenses in Leadville this summer.   Please, please, please every dollar helps.  Ross Moore, 28 Indian Trace, Kings Park, NY 11754, Betty Horstmann and I (Marge Smith) will accept your cash or check donations.

I want to thank Helma Clavin for her help.  I logged onto the website and got bogged down in the German language, so, of course, I asked Helma for her help.  She looked it up, translated, and gave me the facts about the challenge.

SCHOLARSHIP PRESENTATION

On Wednesday, June 8th Fred Horstmann and Marge Smith attended the Connetquot High School Athletic Banquet at Villa Lombardi’s.  There they presented two $500 checks.  One to Kari Viola and the other to David Scaduto.

VAMPIRE REPORT

Elsewhere in this newsletter we request your money, now we want your blood!  The next drive will be on July 14th from 3:30-9:00pm at the Melville Marriott.  This drive is for whole blood only.  Please join us so that we will not, once again, be the club with the fewest donors!

I am sorry if I missed your name among the finishers of a race.  I have only one pair of eyes and there are thousands of names I am looking through.  Also, if you ran in a race that is not on LI, let me know.  I would be glad to put the results here.  Email me at fwh2@aol.com.  Betty Horstmann

Freirhofer’s 5K National Masters’ Championship 5K Race

by Betty Horstmann

This year, for the first time, I was invited to run in the Freirhofer’s 5K National Masters Championship Race in Albany on June 5, 2005.  Fred and I headed up there on Friday morning full of anticipation of a wonderful weekend and we were not disappointed!  The drive was difficult due to road construction and MapQuest which I will never trust again.  Their directions took us all through Albany and we couldn’t find some roads and only came upon others just by chance and when we finally did arrive at our destination we discovered it was right at the exist off of I90!!!!  Does MapQuest not know this??  Sorry that I digress but it was annoying!  As we were checking in, who should be walking down the hall but Marie Louise and Blaine!  How nice to see such friendly faces after our long drive!

The race the following morning was awesome.  There were 3500 women toeing the line at the start.   The walkers had preceded us a few hours earlier so these were all runners!  This was the first “summer day” of the season and it was plenty HOT!  The first 3/4 mile was uphill, not too steep but gradual and long, then we enter a park for a while, out on the road again and back into the park and ready for that 3/4 downhill!  What excitement! There were people all along the way. As I began the downhill there was our cheering squad of Joe and Sue Cordero.  They were yelling and did not stop until I was out of earshot and maybe they were still yelling for all I know.  Fred then picked up the encouraging cheer and I could not slow down even if I had wanted to.

Marie Louise finished first 60-64 and I came in second.  What a feat for Bohemia!  Marie Louise also finished second in the age graded competition to who else but Kathy Martin.  What a feat for Long Island women runners!
