Masters Corner: by Dr. Mary Trotto
Despite bitter cold winds and a temperature of 9 degrees wind chill, BTC once again had a successful Latino relays. The women’s masters consisted of Helma Clavin, Joan Ackerman, Pat Delaney, our honorary member, Hilory Boucher from NRC, Mary Wagner and Mary Trotto. Managed to nip Massaqpequa, thanks to the speedy time of Mary W who ran the fastest leg in a 14:55 (2-mile split time). The BTC women placed first in a time of 1:41:43. Massapequa’s time was 1:43:15 and the third place team, the Golden Girls were 1:44:15. The men found themselves with an abundance of runners. Nine men showed up to run but only six could be on the team. The guys decided who would run and the extra guys tried to add themselves to other teams. Charlie Watts who had been biking, it has to be freezing on the bike, decided to just continue biking. The men ran in the Over the Hill Category and placed 2nd. The team members were Jose Mendez, Mike Service, Joe Cordero, Ben Skura (way too young to be with these old guys), Jay Masten and Tim Deleo. Their overall time was 1:16:10.
At the recent snow-covered GLIRC trail relays BTC has three senior masters women’s teams made up of: Mary Wagner, Rosemary (thinking of joining BTC) and Sue Kretzmer (team 1) ; Helma Clavin, Mary Trotto and Betty Horstmann (team 2); Betty Horstmann, Joan Ackerman and Mary Wagner (team 3). Betty and Mary ran 2 different 2-mile legs). All three teams finished within minutes of each other and Sue Kretzmer’s team 1 won the money. You will have to ask Sue how she had to get help from Betty and Helma to win this one!
I find it very interesting about our club. When you call up members to find out if they would like to run on a relay, their first reaction is usually, “Oh, I’m not running fast.” I usually tell runners that they do not have to race the event hard; after all, the fun is just in the running of the relay. Can you finish the distance? I ask, “Then you can be on the team!” I am always more concerned about having a team, participating and having fun. Yet there is something very amazing that goes on. The BTC runners show up, they are excited to run, they may have a few misgivings, which I try to assure them that it is just a fun event “so do not kill yourself!” and the race goes off. And suddenly the same runners who didn’t know how they were feeling and nervous about their running come before my leg and say “hey, we’re in first place!” Are they saying that to let me know that they don’t want me to “blow it!”
In any case, I am not surprised that they are in first place. Because I seem to be the only one who knows the quality of the runners we have on our team. In the senior division both for men and women, BTC has the best runners on the Island. Marie Louise Michelsohn, Helma Clavin, Joan Ackerman and Alex Finger are the fastest seniors running on Long Island. I am in awe of them and they inspire me to keep running. These ladies can run at 80% speed and still be the best in their age. As for the men, it is much the same. Joe Cordero, Jose Mendez, Mike Service, Charlie Watts, Blaine Lawson, Maury Dean and Warren Steinert are the fastest senior men on the island. Even on their off day they can outrun most guys half their age. In the masters division we have fantastic runners - Rudy Afanador, Betty Horstmann, Mary Wagner, Phoebe Anderson, Lori McKeough, Chris Katz, Judy Carroll, Pat Carroll, Z Denis, Joan Cook, Sue Kretzmer, Mary Fraker, Carol Bozzi, Caryl Senn Grifiths, Kelly Stamm, Helen Visgauss, Dennis Michel, Silas Murray, Tim DeLeo, Larry Eastman, Jay Satenstein, Alex Gonzalez and Frank Notarstefano. Putting these great runners together on a team is bound to product winning results even if they feel under the weather somewhat. But if the runners beg off and don’t run, then we don’t have a team and we don’t stand a chance. So BTC runners if I give you a call for a relay remember: It is just to have a BTC team represented and to have fun. If we happen to place, well that may happen just because of who you are!
To give a final example, this past indoor season, getting a team together to run both for the men and the women was very difficult. Once again I was herding cats! I would get four runners and then I would have two then three then four again and back to three, Oaff! The men were much the same. But I had to pre-register the teams. I registered two men’s teams and one women’s team. Then I got a call from the meet director, he wanted the names of the runners who were on each team. I felt like saying to him, “I would like to know who the runners are on each team!” In any case, on meet day we had one women’s team and two men’s teams. The men placed and scored points for the team; the women not only placed but set a new LITF Indoor 4x200m 40-49 record. The team members were: Sue Kretzmer, Helma Clavin, Mary Trotto and Lori McKeough and for the men Joe Cordero, Jay Masten, Charlie Watts, Jose Mendez, Rudy Afanador, Tim DeLeo, and Silas Murray. Once again BTC scored the most total points for the season and won the Soar Foot Cup. At the last meeting we celebrated with champagne and all of the participants of the relays received Lottery Scratch Offs. Jose Mendez and I won some money to boot!
For the upcoming Grand Prix series I am asking for BTC runners to give me a call just the day before the race to tell me if they plan to run. They can also tell me if they plan to run it hard or just for the fun of it. Those that are racing the course will be placed in their category: Open or Masters, those who just want to run the course for fun will be stepped down to fill in the Open team. We always have lots of master runners be we are often short in the Open category. Remember finishing means you score for the team, not your place. Once again my number is 631-979-8445 and you can just leave a message if I am not home. The grand prix schedule is given below. Last year the teams earned $300 from placing in the grand prix and this year I know we could have more teams placed if we are just better organized.
The following members of BTC have joined LITF and declared BTC as their team affiliation: If your name is not on this list and it should be please give me a call. If you have not as yet joined LITF for 2005, then please consider joining. Joining LITF not only supports our sport but it is also important for LITF to offer programs for young children at a reasonable cost. Even if you are not running competitively you can still join and support the sport of running. Parents, coaches, volunteers, spectators, race directors, officials and athletes all make up the running community. Join LITF and be part of this great community!

Way to go, Marcello!
For those of you who missed the February meeting, this is one of the handouts that I gave out. The other handout on cycling your training is too long for the newsletter, but if you would like a copy, I can email it to you. Just give me a call.

Membership News
March 2005
By Estella Clasen
Work and family obligations have kept me from attending the last couple of meetings. I had to check out the website to get some updates. I see that Larry Eastman finished an impressive eighth place out of 370 in his age group at the Rock and Roll Marathon. I suspect there are more great performances from the club. Please call in any special events in your life to me at 631-803-0586.
Bob Clasen’s father suffered a stroke and is in intensive care. This is one of the reasons you have not seen Bob or me lately. We look forward to seeing our running friends when life settles down for us.
Congratulations to Ben Skura and Sue Williams who became to proud parents of Violet Rose on January 14th. She weighed 8.2lbs. and was 20.5 inches long. We expect to see Ben pushing Violet in the baby jogger as soon as she is old enough.
Best wishes for a fast and complete recovery to Dr. Bob Lawrence who fell and broke his femur.
Personally, I am not able to run anymore. After 25 years of competing in road races it looks like I may have to hang up my racing flats. I still have pain in my knee if I try to run. Looks like walking and dancing will be my main activities. This does not mean that I am leaving the club. The people in the BTC have a special place in my heart. It was the congenial nature of the club that first persuaded me to join the BTC. I couldn’t find a friendlier, more caring, supportive, and fun group to be with.
Please make sure you have sent in your membership dues. The club would hate to lose you as a member. Please send your $20 check made out to BTC to me at 3 Cedar Street, Bellport, NY 11713.
I have one Entertainment book left for sale. Give me a call if you would like to purchase it. The book is well worth the $20.
All members are invited to our summer track workouts. Our tentative starting date is Wednesday, June 22nd.
You are invited to
California's Longest Party on October 15-16, 2005
during The Relay. As featured in Runner's World (February) cover story,
12-member teams run 36 legs through 36 cities from the wine country,
across the Golden Gate Bridge at midnight under a full moon to
the beach.
Please forward this invitation to your club members and friends.
Hope that you will join us for a little (199-mile) run!
In the long run, organ donation saves lives.
