Mark your calendar for the LITF Outdoor
Championships. They will be held on June
11th and 12th at Farmingdale H> S. There will be some great competition that day
since it is also the Open Empire State Trials.
You can compete in an event, officiate or volunteer. To officiate you
will need your official’s card which you can get from LITF (see Joe
Cordero for details on how to become
certified). To
volunteer contact the LITF office and give your name or just show up. They always need help at registration, and,
of course, there is the “zem gardening” as Pat
Satenstein calls the
raking of the pit for the long and triple jump.
Masters Corner
Congratulations to all who ran and puddle jumped the
½ marathon and marathon. Once again BTC had a great showing at the
awards table. Starting with Rudy Afanador’s third place
over-all finish of 2:50:27 to the 1st place age group finish of A
Denis (W50) 1:49:11; Betty Horstmann (W60) 1:45:33,
and Joe Cordero (M65) 1:36:11. The third place finish of Jose
Mendez (M65) 1:42:51, Rene Marcucci 3:13:27
and Frank Pellegrino 3:23:43.
Unfortunately, the picnic was frozen out, damp, rainy and cold. The ½ marathoners could not hang out waiting
for the marathoners to finish.
Hopefully, we will have better weather next year. The full results for all BTC runners can be
found in the race results section of the newsletter.
Here
is a challenge to all: Form a Team
It is not too late to form a team
for the 2006 WALT DISNEY WORLD* Marathon Weekend. Form a group of 3-5 runners and compete for
team awards! (Please note that this is not a relay). To register as a team, all runners must
register for the same race individually).
Team members then must complete a team entry form. In addition to being eligible to compete for
team prizes, team members will receive a special team bib number, acess to the Team Reunion area at the Finish Line and
exclusive Team “Check-In at Disney’s Health and Fitness Expo.
Goofy’s race and a Half Challenge
Are you Goofy enough to take on the
biggest challeng in WALT DISNEY WORLD* Marathon
history? With the Half Marathon taking
place on Saturday, and the Marathon run on Sunday, several athletes are taking
the ultimate challenge and running them both.
If you are looking for a new way to experience the WALT DISNEY WORLD*
Marathon Weekend, we invite you to be a part of Goofy’s
Race and a Half Challenge. Athletes who
complete both the Half Marathon and the Marathon will receive the first ever
Goofy Medal, in addition to receiving the Donald Medal for the Half Marathon
and the Mickey Medal for the Full Marathon.
The challenge has been made, you too can be
Goofy enough to accept! To be a part of
the first ever Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge,
simply sign up for both the Half Marathon and the Marathon.
I have already signed up for
both. Who will join me??? Rudy?, Tim?, Betty?, Alex?, Joan?, Mike?, Jose?, Jay?
The May meeting: I had a tentative program scheduled for May. However, the person had a change in her work schedule and cannot make the meeting. Unless someone steps up and talks about some amazing “feat” he/she have participated in, there will be no guest speaker this month.
Congratulations
to all of the BTC age-group winners in the Elizabeth McNamee 5K LITF Grand Prix

MEMBERSHIP NEWS
MAY 2005
Randy Salamone designed a software program for race results. It was tested at the last meeting and is now
ready to use at our upcoming “Buddy Run.”
The BTC thanks Randy for all of his work.
Rudy Afanador, Jay Masten and Charlie
Watts recently ran in the Boston Marathon.
We know how hard they must have trained for this hilly course.
I received
some news from Barbara Galpin, who now resides in
Florida. Barbara is the swim captain for
the Relay for Life team in the Villages where she lives. Barbara is also doing the Senior Games in
Florida and in June she will be in Pittsburgh for the Nationals. She qualified in a number of events. We look forward to seeing Barbara this summer
when she visits Long Island.
Many
members have memberships which are expiring.
Please check to see if you have paid your dues. It would make my job much easier if your dues
were paid January 1st. You
can pro-rate your dues if you paid at another time of the year. Call me now at 803-0589 if you have any
questions about your membership.
BTC SPEED SESSIONS 2005
Join us
at the Connetquot Track for speed work this
year. We will begin our official
workouts on Wednesday, June 22 at 6:15pm.
Plan on your warm-up and stretching until 6:30. Bring water, a towel and clothes to change
into if you plan on going to Saviano’s for pizza
after the workout. Estella Clasen and Joe Cordero will be running the sessions.
The
workout is for all levels! Walkers are
also welcomed. We will be breaking into
several groups according go ability. The
following are some suggestions for the speed training.
1. Always warm up before doing anything
fast. A light jog or fast walk is the
best way to warm up. Follow this with
some light stretching.
2. This is a speed workout, not a race! The goal is to learn pace and maintain pace. Run your 400 meter lap at 5-10 seconds faster
than your 5K race pace.
3. We usually do interval speedwork. The interval actually refers to the rest interval. The rest interval can be a jog or a walk. As you become fitter, you can decrease the
amount of rest you take.
4. All of your 400s should be about the
same. If you do six 400 meter intervals,
all six should be within a couple seconds of each other.
5. Try to run the intervals with several other
people. Misery loves company.
6. Please stay to the outside lanes when doing
your recovery lap. Watch out for other
people on the track.
7. Cool down like you would warm up, jog or walk
and then stretch.
8. Join us at Saviano’s
for pizza. Who feels like cooking after
all that hard work!
***Every week there will be a suggested workout. Feel free to modify the workout. Remember to listen to your body

RUDY RACES UPDATE MAY, 05
Besides dodging ice and snow this winter Rudy did keep
busy doing a few races and keeping in shape for the upcoming race season. At the Caumsett 50
K he ran a 3:41 to come in 4th overall and 1st master. At the Ocean Drive Marathon in New Jersey he
ran a 2:50, again 4th overall and 1st master. At Boston Rudy, with a time
of 2:48:45, placed 216th overall the 201st male and 28th in his
division. As those of us who were
at the finish line at the Long Island Marathon saw, Rudy was 3rd overall, and 1st
in his age group with a time of 2:50:27.
Badwater isn’t on the agenda this year but we will keep you
posted once his plans are completed.
