MEMBERSHHIP NEWS
NOVEMBER 2006
I have to hand it to Mary Trotto. Mary is so cool and organized under pressure. I am referring to our Elite Run where we had the unfortunate incident of Randy’s computer stolen from the office we use for tabulating results. The race had just started when the computer was noticed missing. Mary immediately went to the old way we used for results (before we used computers) and got the results finished.
As membership chair it was
encouraging to see a good turnout at our last BTC meeting. This month we have our annual runners fashion
show. Come see the latest in runner’s
clothes and shoes. There is no meeting
in December; however we have our holiday party on December 10th
where any important announcements will be made.
Please bring your check for the party to our November 15th
meeting. Otherwise please send me your
check by December 4th. The
check should be made payable to the Bohemia Track Club and sent to me, Estella Clasen at
Please welcome back Maureen Mauro and Jennifer Mendelsohn into the BTC.
SIXTY YEARS, SIX HOURS
By Janis Henderson
On
October 15, The Greater Long Island Running Club sponsored its annual birthday
bash for all Long Islanders celebrating their sixtieth birthday this year. Not the traditional party games, pointy hats,
noise makers, and presents kind of party.
We weren’t feted indoors with padded rocking chairs and a gourmet meal,
but outdoors on a brisk, but sunny, 43 degree October day at Sunken Meadow
State Park with a cross country race– lasting SIX hours.
I am not a
great runner, not even a good runner, but how often can you be honored for
turning sixty? Many entered, but it was us birthday baby boomers who took
center ring. The course, a 2 mile loop,
could be run, walked or both for as long as you wished. If someone had asked me - they didn’t – what
an appropriate 60 year olds event should include, I might suggest a ¼ mile
track with plenty of masseuses available for each lap. Maybe a hot toddy, too. And six hours? Are you crazy?
It is
nice of GLIRC to honor us, who, at age 60, are still upright and can propel
ourselves forward at varying degrees of speed.
There are many six decade and beyond runners locally, still in great
shape, still competitive. And then
there’s me and a few others. Game, but
pretty pathetic. My plan was to complete
a lap, hang out for a while, maybe do another and leave. That would total 4 miles and, since I have
never run more than 3.1 miles, that would be a personal best for me, more than
enough to pat myself on the back and return to the comforts of my warm home.
After a
group photo of the 46’ers, I walked 2 laps, felt fine, even energized, and
decided to run a bit of lap 3. I crossed
the finish line, gobbled up some jelly beans, peanuts, gumdrops, cookies and
other “healthy” snacks, and headed out.
Before I knew it, I was halfway through, three hours, and the group
enthusiasm carried me along. I was
having fun. The problem was, my feet weren’t.
They’ve never done more than 3 miles either. I stopped for 2 band aids for one foot and
padding on the other and felt much better.
As we approached the finish time I sprinted, determined to give it 100
%, even if I couldn’t walk tomorrow. I
was exhilarated and exhausted. My feet
were on fire and I painfully sat down - the first time in six hours - for the
hero lunch. Getting up was torture. After a birthday cake and song, I checked the
postings for my total distance - 14.74 miles!
“Holy Cow,” as baby boomers used to say.
I even placed fourth of all the birthday kids, no where close to those
who ran over 30 miles, but beyond my wildest imagination.
At home,
as I sat soaking my burning feet in a water-filled kitty litter pan, I marveled
at my accomplishment. What a day! I had heard runners speak of reaching their
marathon lap, 26 miles, and suddenly realized, in wonderment, that I had
completed a half marathon distance. Can
you imagine that? Not too shabby for an
old lady. I am woman – hear me roar!

we have, on paper, the toughest, finest, most
competitive athletes on
One concept that will save us money is the Club entry fee. Instead of paying
$12 for each event per person the team pays one entry fee for the entire meet.
Example: Mary Trotto is famous for entering
practically every event. Say she enters ten events @ $12 per event she must pay
$120. I enter four events, that is another $48. You
enter four events. $48. Jay Masten
enters four events. $48. Jose Mendez enters three
events. $36. Charlie Watts enters three events. $36. Jan Henderson enters four events. $48.
Seven people pay $284 for 34 events. With the Club fee of $200 or $250, we
enter the whole team and declare what events we want and save a bundle. That is
in the works, so no fee is set yet. This way we get more people to try more
events and not pay a fortune for the experiment.
More information will be coming as we get closer to the meets.
We have won the SOAR FOOT RELAY Trophy for the past years because we fielded
open and masters MEN AND WOMEN teams. We need to continue our winning tradition
by scheduling relay teams for each date listed. Those who cannot make the
Championship date should show team spirit by picking a date for the other relay
runs. Every relay date is important to win the SOAR FOOT RELAY TROPHY so any
time one commits to a date, that person is putting Bohemia Track Club in the
spotlight as the best on
