Here is a thought on COMPETITION, ONE PERSON'S PERSPECTIVE COMPETITION Competition is a substitute for WAR! There is a struggle for supremacy There is a battle to be first Athletic Achievement is an upperAn ego boost, a high Conflict to relieve stress A safety valve for daily pressures A focus where we can dissipate ill feelings Competition to cleanse the soul Combat to banish the phantoms of fear That haunt our memories What an addiction, what a drug What a natural purge for the spirit Battles without blood Wars without casualties Just disappointments to those who lose for the moment Far better than a loss of life or limb Into the fray we go again and again Competition is civilized COMBAT!                                               WRITTEN  7 OCTOBER 2005 BY JOE CORDERO

M MICHELSOHN WINS TWO GOLDS AND A SILVER AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SAN SEBASTIAN

With an impressive display of strength, speed and intelligent strategy Bohemia Track Club's Marie-Louise Michelsohn won two gold medals (the 5000m. and 1500m. runs) and a silver (the 800m. run) at the World Masters Track and Field Championships held this year in San Sebastian , Spain . The games, held from August 22nd to September 3rd, drew more than 6000competitors, including top athletes from around the world. There were particularly strong teams from countries in Europe, South and North America, Australia , and several African nations. Winning even one medal at these championships was an outstanding achievement. In the 5000m run, the early lead was taken by Jenny Allebone, an extremely strong runner from South Africa , who set a blistering pace. Marie-Louise tucked in behind her and the two of them slowly pulled away from the two best 5K runners in Europe, who held the third and forth position (among the 22 women on the track). This continued for 12 laps. Then with 200 meters remaining in the race, Marie-Louise blew past Allebone and streaked in to win by 10 meters in 20:12.66.

Although tired and aching from the 5K race, Marie-Louise decided, with encouragement from Sid Howard, to enter the 800m run. In the semi-final heat she finished comfortably in second and moved on to the finals, which featured the world's strongest middle distance runners -- among them Anne Stobaus, the current world record holder in the 400m (Women 60-64). In the finals, these runners set a quick pace, and Marie-Louise hung in fourth position, behind Jonkers, Haakensveen and Stobaus. In the last turn Jonkers and Haakensveen turned up the pace. At this point Marie-Louise moved to the outside and found another gear. She passed Stobaus and ran down Jonkers to finish second in 2:44.98.

In the 1500m run Marie-Louise was the class of the field. She made her move with 500 meters to go and finished well ahead of the second runner in 5:44.79.Marie-Louise turned 64 on October 8th and will compete in the 65-69 age-group category at the next world games.

USATF Long Island hosted the inaugural USATF National 5 km Disability Cross Country Championships, October 2, 2005, at Sunken Meadow State Park , New York . The event was a cooperative venture between USATF Long Island and the USATF Committee on Athletics for the Disabled (USATFCOAD) to offer a competitive opportunity for athletes with disabilities. The challenging course provided the backdrop for this unique and highly competitive competition. A total of 28 athletes took part .Dan Renahan, an athlete with autism, was the overall winner, completing the 5 kilometer distance in 16:50.3. Other champions included; Marcus Sanders, (cognitive impairment), 18:43.7; Steven Cuomo, (cerebral palsy), 19:45.0; and Tom Koehler (single amputee), 20:22.5. The first female to finish was Sara Okolowich, who won the cognitive impairment division with a time of 28:42. She was closely followed by Pavala Salacova (amputee) in 28:44. Susan Nesbihal-Cordero ran 39:11 to claim the visually impaired division. The goal of USATF COAD is to link local programs for athletes with disabilities with their local USATF Association in an effort to provide access to training, facilities, and competition for the athletes.

RUDY AT THE WORLD CHALLENGE

Mid July found Rudy and his wife Lucy, in Worschach, Austria where Rudy and eight other runners represented the United States in the World Challenge twenty – four hour race. As usual, he did us proud by being the second American with a distance of 228,60255km.  He was 23rd of 177 runners from about 27 countries.  Lucy was his support “team” for this event.

Rudy said the people in this small town were wonderful hosts with many of them staying up all night and through the rain to cheer for the runners.  It was through the fund raising ability of Ken Demulder and the generosity of club members that made Rudy’s participation in this event extra special to all of us.

Masters Corner by Dr. Mary Trotto

Let us start with some great news, first the Men’s masters team is still in first place.  Second, our BTC masters did well at the nationals and Marie Louise Michelsohn is doing great at the World Track and Field Championships.  Marie Louise is the world champion in the 5000m in a time of 20:12.  She also is the world champion in the 1500m with a time of 5:44.79 and she placed 2nd in the 800m in a time of 1:44:98.  Congratulations Marie Louise!

At the Nationals held in Honolulu this past August, Joe Cordero, Sue Nesbihal-Cordero and Mary Trotto competed for the club. With their great performances BTC placed 13th out of 234 teams.  And the top three teams had over thirty athletes; in fact the first team brought almost 100 athletes from California and Arizona .

Joe Cordero ran the 5000m, 10,000m, 2000m Steeplechase and the 8K National Road Race.  He placed 4th in the 5000m, 2nd in the 10,000m and 1st in the steeplechase.  Joe also placed 2nd in the road race.  Joe said his 5000m run was a little flat and he predicted he would win the steeplechase the following day and true to form he ran the race from the front and never looked back.  I was up to my usual, competing in as many as eleven events plus the pentathlon.  I finally had a good hurdle time and actually beat out my competitor in the division but was disappointed that the time did not earn points toward the pentathlon scoring.  I also did well in the 800m but my opponent out scored me in the jumps (long jump and high jump) and also had a better throw, so in the end, I placed second to LaTanya.  In the steeplechase, I was a little hesitant.  This was the first time I was doing the steeplechase since I broke my arm in the event at the World’s in 2003.  There is not one steeplechase course in all of Maui so I could not practice.  But I ran a steady pace and managed to finish the race.  The time 11L24 was far from my best time in the event but I was healthy, happy and the National Champion.  In the discus, Sue Nesbihal and I were duking it out for third place.  Sue had only started throwing again a week before the Nationals so she almost did not compete but after doing well in practice she decided to give it a go.  Sue’s best throws would have put her solidly in third place but on each occasion when the discus really took off so did her balance.  On her best throws she was called for a foot fault and a sector fault.  Sue came in 4th and only a few inches separated her best “legal” throw and mine.

In the pole vault I managed to clear a few heights but my final height was not as high as I would have liked.  On the other hand in the long jump and the triple jump I had two PR’s.  Long jumping 3.24m and my triple jump was 6.02.  With that jump I became the National Champion in the triple and placed 3rd in the long jump.

In the relays on the final day, Joe joined a 4x800m team and a 4x400 team to place 1st and 2nd in the 60-69 men’s division.  In my relay, I organized a team from the east coast of Kathy Martin , Carolyn Smith-Hanna and Ann Makoskie for the women’s 50-59 team.  We not only placed 1st but we set a new meet record!

Kathy Martin, our friend from Northport, also had an amazing meet.  She placed 1st in the 5000m, 10,000m and 800m.  In the two longer races she lapped the field.  She also ran the 8K USATF National Championship and came in first woman overall.  Congratulations to Joe, Sue, Marie Louise and Kathy for a great showing at the Championships.

Upcoming grand prix races are the Oysterfest - October 15th and our race Nov. 13th , the Mustang Run Nov 20th and finally the Snowball 5 Mile Run Dec. 10th.

I cannot be at the Oysterfest.  I will be in London visiting David and Kate.  The Oysterfest is a team scoring race.  If you are planning to run that race be sure to form teams and if you are planning to run the Elite and or Mustang Runs please give me a call.

For those interested in running xc here is the schedule for upcoming races: It would be nice to have a team of men and women for each of these races.  Remember in cross country your time is not important only your place in the race.  If you are interested in having a nice run through the hills and meadows of Long Island, then come and run cross country.  I am setting up a women’s masters team for the USATF-LI 8K championships and Rob’s run.  Anyone interested in running on 10/23 or 11/27 please give me a call @979-8445 or email me at: mtrotto@liu.edu.  Usually 3 or 4 runners are needed to score.  The men can check with Joe Cordero for team organization.

Unfortunately, the USA Masters (see below) is being held on the same day as the 60th Birthday 6 hour run at Sunken Meadow and many of our BTC members will be running this race.  Betty Horstmann will be honored as one of the runners turning 60 this year.  Anyone wishing to go upstate and run the National Championships you can find the application on the USATF web site.  Organizing a BTC team would be great and there is prize money for the top masters team both men and women to finish.  I can not go to this race but if others are interested I will help you organize the team and send in the team application.
