BTC takes on the World! 

The 2007 World Masters Athletic Championships were held in Riccione, Italy from September 3^rd

to the 15^th.  The Championships consisted of both Stadia (on the track and in the field) and

Non-Stadia (8K Cross Country, 10K and 20K Road Walk and the Marathon).

Once again Marie Louise Michelsohn (W65) lead the way at the SMA Championships.  She won

3 medals:

Three Golds – 800m in 2:53:19; 1500m in 6:06:17 and the Steeplechase in 9:30:53.

The other BTC competitors who competed in Riccione, Italy were:

Dr. Mary Trotto (W60) – Silver in the 2000m Steeplechase in 10:59

4^th in pole vault: 1.2m

4^th in 4x400m relay: 5:40.9

7^th in 80mH: 22:35

10^th in triple jump: 5.63m

16^th in javelin: 16:88m

19^th in 800m: 3:34.7

20^th in long jump: 2.65m

Betty Horstmann (W60) placed 4^th in the 10k: 47:22

4^th in the 4x400m relay 5:40.9

5^th in the 4x100m relay: 1:12

10^th in the 5000m: 22:50

Sue Nesbihal-Cordero (W55) placed 11^th in the Javelin: 15:46m

Joe Cordero (M65) placed 11^th in the 2000m Steeplechase: 8:58.03

13^th in the 8K cross country: 32:47

20^th in the 10K on the track: 44:41

Blaine Lawson (M65) placed 33^rd in the 8K cross country: 36:49

Our friend from the Northport Running Club, Kathy Martin (W55) also did well earning 4 medals:

2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze.  She won the cross country and the 10k on the track, placed in the

 1500m and 5000m.The next Outdoor World Masters Championship will be held in 2009 in Lahti,

 Finland; and then the Championships come back to the USA for 2011 in Sacramento, CA. 

Next year in Clermont, France will be the Indoor Championships, March 17-22, 2008.  For more

  The indoor championships also include outdoor throwing events:  discus, hammer and javelin as well

 as Non-Stadia events: 8K Cross Country, 10k walk and the half marathon.

Membership News:

Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 17th at 8pm.  Former member, Joe Dugan, will be at the Bohemia

Rec Center at the very beginning of the meeting to collect used running shoes, tee shirts, clothing, towels,

soap, and other personal care items for distribution to the homeless. 

We will also have a speaker give us a brief presentation on the Bermuda 10k and half marathon which is held

in January. 

As usual we will have a 50/50 drawing, a raffle, and refreshments.  I am looking forward to seeing you there.
