This is a sad time for all of us in the US, whether we have friends or family in New Orleans or not, we are all saddened by the terrible ordeal our neighbors in the south have gone through and what they will go through in the future. Hopefully there will be something all of us will be able to do for these victims in the near future. Maybe we can collect money at our race or donate money from the club. We can discuss these things at our next meeting.
Our next meeting will be very important for a number of reasons so please make every effort to attend and do not forget to bring your dancing clippers. Bob and Estella Clasen will demonstrate some of their wonderful moves on the dance floor, and they will teach us some of the basic steps of the various ball room dances. At this meeting we will discus the upcoming Elite 8k race and also do the final organization for the Ocean to Sound Relay. If you are a captain of a team or on a team, please make every effort to attend.
Kudos to Randy Salamone and his great computer skills. Also thanks to all of the BTC members who came to help at the Brick House Race. It was a great success and everything went smoothly. Randy did something that even David Katz has trouble doing. Randy had a flawless results report. There was not an error in the timing or the results. In addition, the results were first posed within 15 minutes of the last finisher and the awards were ready within 30 minutes of the last finisher. This is the same system that we will use for our 8k race in November. There are a few things with the program that we will change a little bit but all in all the timing and the results are working well. Thanks also to Jay Satenstein, Charlie Watts and Bill Hall. There was not one error with the timing of the race. I hope the three of you will be available for our 8k. In addition to the timers, other BTC members who helped with registration and the finish line were: Estella and Bob Clasen, Eleanor Hall, Betty Horstmann, Jacky Horstmann, Daisy and Jose Mendez, Dennis and Stell Michel, Marge Smith, Sue and Joe Cordero and Mary Trotto, Barry and Amy Lipsky.

LEADVILLE-THE RACE ACROSS
THE SKY
THEIR MOTO:
YOU
ARE BETTER THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE AND YOU CAN DO MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU CAN
On August 17th, Rudy Afanador and crew, Renee Marcucci. Juan Oliveras, Evelyn Torres and I (Marge Smith) left he heat and humidity of Long Island and headed for Leadville, Colorado for Rudy’s running in the Leadville Trail 100.
A little about Leadville – it’s 10,152 feet above sea level and said to be the highest incorporated city in the country. It’s a boom or bust area. It once had a population of over 20,000, now it’s a little over 2,000. At one time or another it was home to Molly Brown, Frank and Jesse James, Bat Masterson Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Since the beginning of the silver boom, Leadville district mines have produced nearly $2 billion in gold, silver, lead, zinc, copper, iron, bismuth, manganese and molybdenum. Then about 30 years ago mines were closed and unemployment was the highest in the country.
The first Leadville 100 was run in 1983 with 45 runners, 10 finished. It was d one to support the charities in the area. In 1994 a 100-mile mountain bike race was added
This year 487 registered, 407 made it thru the first checkpoint, and 213 finished before the 30-hour cutoff. Rudy was the 58th across the finish line with a time of 25 hours and 6 minutes.
What makes THE RACE ACROSS THE SKY unique is the altitude. It starts in Leadville at 4AM on Saturday. The course dips down, and goes up to about 11,100, down to about 9,700 and so on. After the lowest point about 9,200 the trails take the runners up to about 12,600 on narrow steep switchbacks. Then in about two miles it’s down to about 9,900 and back up to about 10,200. That’s the 50-mile point where runners can pick up their pacer; Renee was the first, he got to go up the 12,600 peak and then down to about 9,200 and thus started the return over the same route back to the starting point. That means some runners are on the switchbacks during the night. Trails are marked with glow tape and runners are encouraged to carry flashlight and wear headlights. While Juan was pacing, day turned to night and they encountered some rain but this year runners were spared snow, hail and lightening. Next. Rene pulled a 15-miler with another peak over 11,000. There are medical and aid stations along the way, anywhere from 7 to 13.5 miles apart. The stations are supplied with beverages, snacks, sandwiches, potatoes, and other carbs and salty foods. Medical personnel could pull the runner from the race and each station had a time limit, if the runner didn’t get through within the time limit he could be pulled from the race.
Crewing was much different than Badwater or the Long Island runs. In those instances we were with Rudy or no more than a mile away. Since this was a trail run the support vehicles took a different route than the runners to the check point/medical stations. We would be out of contact for 2 ½ or 3 hours. We, and it seems every crew, would hurry to the next spot. Intellectually we knew we had plenty of time but the fear was there that we would miss our runner. Crew parking could be a problem thanks goodness Rudy was fast enough so we were ahead of most vehicles. At many spots, crews had to walk about a mile to meet their runner at the designated area. Crews carried extra clothing, supplements, first aid stuff, food, water and encouragement. It was easy to tell the people who do this on a regular basis, they were so organized! There were a few places where the runners passed through the row of support vehicles where things were on the tailgate so the whole area looked like a giant flea market. There was plenty of time to talk to other crews. I noticed that runners weren’t referred to by name, but rather “our runner” or “your runner” was the terms used. At one checkpoint, Twin Lakes (at the 39.5 outbound and 60.5 return) a café was open so crews had a chance to eat a hot meal. Other than that we had food and beverages we had purchased in a grocery store. During the day the sun was shining, there was no wind so the temperature was fine. After dark it was another story. Temperatures in the 40’s are cold when you are standing still waiting for your runner. At the last checkpoint where Juan took over from Renee as pacer again we and other crews and pacers waited around a propane heater. It was about two AM. It looked like the pictures of the homeless during the depression. Nobody was talking at that point. By now we had all been up for about 24 hours and Rudy and Juan had about 13.5 miles to go. We had about 8 miles to drive and since our rooms were close to the finish line, Evelyn, Renee and I had the opportunity to go to our rooms and take a welcome shower. Then it was time again to wait for our runner. Rudy was greeted with our cheers as he crossed the finish line and the finisher’s medal was put around his neck.
The award ceremony was Sunday at noon, two hours after the close of the race. All finishers were presented with a beautiful belt buckle and a commemorative sweatshirt with their name and time on the sleeve. Thus ended another “Rudy adventure”.
We should all the proud of Rudy Afanador for this accomplishment!
MEMBERSHIP NEWS
SEPTEMBER 2005
I recently received results from the World Masters Championships at San Sabastian Spain. Our very own Marie Louise Michelsohn placed first in the 5000m with a time of 20:12.6. Marie beat the second place woman from Russia by almost two seconds in her age group which happens to be 60 and over.
There are a number of people who have not paid their dues in over a year. Please check your records to see if you forgot to pay your dues. I would hate to lose any of our members, but the club cannot afford to keep carrying non paying members. Please send your dues to me, Estella Clasen, at 3 Cedar Street, Bellport, NY 11713.
Many of our members, Mary Trotto, Joe and Sue Cordero, Eleanor and Bill Hall, Jose and Daisy Mendez, Betty Horstmann and her daughter-in-law, Jacky Horstmann, Estella and Bob Clasen, Jay Satenstein, Barry Lipsky and his daughter, Dennis and Stella Michel, Marge Smith, and Charles Watts, and Randy Salamone volunteered their time on August 28th to make the Twilight 5k Trot at the Brick House Brewery a success (sorry if I left anyone out). The club has been hired to do their 5K race in December. The race can only be a success if we have enough members to work it. If you have not volunteered for one of our races, please consider helping at one of them.
Please send any items for membership news to me at the above mentioned address, or call at 631 803-0586 or email me at estellaclasen@aol.com.
Estella and Bob Clasen will be doing a Latin dance demonstration for the club meeting. If there is time, there will be a merenque dance lesson. The lesson will be basic and if you can put one foot next to the other you can do this dance!
The 2006 Entertainment books are in. Estella will bring them to the next meeting. The cost this year is $25 and you can make your money back easily by using a couple of the restaurant coupons.
Please welcome our newest members, Michael Soricillo, Nancy Adolf, Shaquille Henry, Jenny Son, and Anges Wolf.
Email Newsletter Many of you are now receiving your newsletter via email and thus saving the club some money and the environment some trees. If you would like to help us in this endeavor to save $ and trees, email me, Betty Horstmann at fwh2@aol.com and I can add your name to this growing list! Thanks you.
